How to unwind after a long workday: a simple 20-minute routine

Most of us don't need a spa weekend. We need a clear signal that the workday is over. This 20-minute routine is built to be easy enough to do every evening.

Minutes 0–5: close the day

Write down the three things you'll do first tomorrow. Close the laptop and put your phone on the other side of the room. The goal is to stop your brain from "keeping tabs open".

Minutes 5–10: let your neck unwind

After hours at a screen, your neck and shoulders are usually the first place you feel the day. Put a cordless kneading neck pillow around your neck, press the button and let it work while you sit back. Slow, deep breaths help: in for four, out for six.

Minutes 10–15: rest your eyes

Screens keep our eyes busy all day. Dim the lights, close your eyes and use a warm compress or a heated eye massager. Five minutes of darkness and gentle warmth feels like a reset.

Minutes 15–20: warm feet, slow mind

Cold feet make it harder to relax. Slip them into a plush foot warmer, make a cup of caffeine-free tea and read a few pages of a book – paper, not a screen.

Make it a habit

  • Same time every evening – right after dinner works well.
  • Keep everything in one basket next to the couch.
  • Skip a day? No problem. Start again tomorrow.
